Engie announced two new networks for the Internet of Things (IoT) in Belgium and Singapore.

Sigfox is how Engie is calling this network, offers a SIM-free connection with no need for a Gateway and no need for technical adaptation to communicate internationally. The system as a whole requires between 200 and 600 times less energy than traditional cell phone networks.

In Belgium, Engie has developed an app for connected tanks, called TankU. It enables companies to measure the content of their fuel oil tanks using a system of smart gages, removing the need for human intervention.

Last year, ENGIE Electrabel also launched its Nexxtender Mobile app, which provides a smart, mobile battery charging solution for electric cars. Sigfox technology allows drivers to communicate with a smart management platform and view comprehensive information about vehicle power consumption and battery status.

On the other hand Sigfox is just one of the communication protocols around. It’s the art of OBJECTSconnected to select the right technology for the job, all protocols have their specifics.




This week the extended executive committee of the Flemish government facilities took the digital crash course of IoT/Bigdata on how it can affect the organization and its services towards their customers.

Is Internet of Things transforming customer engagement in insurance?

Earlier this month, British O2 telecom provider became the first mobile operator to offer a car insurance service, a service that uses IoT technology to encourage safe driving.

By installing an IoT device inside the car, the driver’s behaviour is monitored this will indicate how safe they are.  Data is used to calculate insurance premiums. There’s also an incentive for drivers,   those who choose to take the product will get a discount.

As explained by OBC R&D “IoT is reaching maturity in all kinds of organizations, it’s easy to get carried away about all the possible use-cases and opportunities that now exist. But I strongly believe that, amidst the excitement, it is critical that businesses remember the end-customer and the need to bring real benefit. There’s no point driving forward new innovations if they don’t actually make a difference to day to day lives and strengthen a customer’s relationship. There’s a fine line between truly adding value and just being innovative for the sake of it.

Nearly 250,000 Android users with a credit from BNP Paribas Fortis, Fortis Bank and Hello can do from today contactless mobile payments.

For now, the app is only available to some 250,000 Android users.   By the end of May also 750,000 customers with a debit card from one of these banks can use this service.

Belgium is now the fourth country in Europe where Android Pay is rolled out. Today, according to both partners, Belgium is equiped with over 85,000 payment terminals enabled with this technology.

What is Google Pay ?

-          Supported on Android smartphones running 4.4 KitKat and higher

-          Introduced on NFC-equipped Android Wear devices running Android Wear 2.0

-          Can be used anywhere there's a contactless terminal

Android Pay is a mobile wallet that can store your credit cards, debit cards, loyalty cards, etc. If that sounds a lot like Google Wallet, it's because Android Pay is the new Google Wallet (only it's supposed to be better, more convenient, and secure).

Is Android Pay secure?

Google said it was working with leading payment networks and financial institutions in the US to deliver industry-standard security. Google is using tokenisation, the retailer receives a newly-generated, 16-digit virtual number instead of your actual account number. When there is another major credit card data breach at a retailer, you'll at least know your card is safe.

Android Pay's tokenisation is different from Apple Pay's in that tokens aren't generated in a secure chip within the phone but rather within the cloud. But if you're ever in a place without internet, Android Pay will apparently still be able to access some tokens that are stored on your device.
